Villainous character Alec DUrbervilles role in Thomas Hardys novel Tess of the DUrbervilles is representative of Satan in many ways. A character of questionable morality throughout the novel DUrberville is largely responsible for the downfall of heroine Tess. Earlier drafts of Tess of the DUrbervilles make Alec look younger and more boyish.
But in the final version Hardy decided that Tesss seducerrapist should be more adult. Unlike Tess he knows what hes up to and what the consequences will be and he does it. While out shopping Angel and Tess encounter a man from Alec dUrbervilles village who disparages Tess and denies her virginity.

Even while Alec counterfeits his connection to Tess and the dUrbervilles his rape of Tess would at least be deemed emotional incest usually considered. Feeling guilty Tess parents have her leave home to live with one of her apparent relatives Mrs. DUrberville and her son Alec.
